GARY REDFORD: Featured Artist February 2012

I've got a bit of an obsession with vintage travel and advertising posters - a combination of nostalgia for that era and an admiration for the colouring techniques the artists of the day used to represent the light and the colours of the British countryside. Hopefully some of their influences come across in my work.

These are some of the projects I've been involved with recently.

Steven Spielberg's latest film War Horse brought the opportunity over Christmas to illustrate the cover of Time Out for the early January issue. Time Out had an exclusive interview with the director. The horse in the film has a distinctive marking on the top of his head so I had to make sure that was there in the illustration and the details of the uniform had to be authentic to the period. The background scene needed a bright and optimistic feel as the issue was all about the upcoming year.

The wintry street scene on the left is a self promotional piece. The book cover on the right is the second in a series of three books for Virago who are republishing the novels of Rebecca West. This book cover needed to reflect the Edwardian setting and evoke the texture of life for a family growing up in a grand old house before the first world war.

I did these cheese packaging labels for the Somerdale English Cheese range. They were being exported to the US so they wanted to reinforce the quintessential Englishness with these classic English scenes and landmarks - St Paul's, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. I don't know how the Royal household felt about being 'Smoked' or Tower Bridge being labeled with 'Farmhouse'.

This was a commission for the cover of the Wall Street Journal golf report, for a hot list article on the worlds best golf courses. They wanted a vintage iconic feel to it. As part of the brief I was asked to design some luggage labels to represent the golf courses, which you can see on the golf bag. Also on this brief they wanted the vintage theme to really come across so I was asked to give the typography an Edwardian feel.
