Inspirations

Just how do illustrators come up with those ideas? What is it that informs and inspires their creations? At AOI Portfolios we attempt to answer some of those questions by exploring the influences of illustrators who work within a similar discipline. This month, three illustrators who work with cartoon imagery talk about their inspirations.

"I was impressed by the way his work seemed to cross over between graphic and fine art. At that time my artwork was mainly creating lino cuts, but after seeing his work I began to develop an interest in ink drawings."
Adam Larkum

"I loved Giles’ weekly cartoons in the Express, particularly the way that each week he developed the characters of the family. I was always doing my own version: comparing a rich family and a poor family who lived next door to each other."
Susan Hellard

"Perhaps it’s the theatre of politics, the good guys and the bad guys, the cheering and the booing, it’s pure burlesque and pantomime."
Gary Barker
